September: month in review

September proved to be quite busy, but with little to report…

What’s this month’s image? It’s an early morning shot of the Thames, looking down towards Tower Bridge from close to London Bridge. Also in frame is the outline of City Hall and HMS Belfast.

Did you do anything to it? There’s not much in the way of Photoshop done to the image, although I have had a play with the tones and saturation. It’s always tricky shooting into the light as you tend to lose some of the colour. To compensate I’ve boosted the saturation, but only in the highlights. I gives the image, I think, a slightly cinematic effect and one that I quite like.

What’s it doing here? I was down in London for a couple of days at the beginning of the month shooting some images for a project I’ve had in mind for a couple of years at least. I’ll post those at some point, but this was one of the out-takes from the trip.

It’s an image I almost walked past; I’d been taking the image of the Shard (below) and had put my camera away before I spied the light on HMS Belfast. I took the camera out and took a quick snap with few expectations; in the event I really liked the tones and the colours in the shot. It just goes to show that you should always take the shot - digital film really is quite cheap compared to the cost of missed opportunities.

The trip itself was good, although tiring. I did something like 75,000 steps over the two days, but happily got what I wanted. I also bagged a couple of other shots that have been on my list for a while - there are a few more from the trip below.

Have you been up to much else? It’s been busy again. The main event from the month was the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, which I’ve written about here. The edit, however, was a monster…

There was a group of us at Knockhill at the start of the month for the much disrupted final meeting of the year, which proved a little frustrating. I also shot my first ever equestrian event, which was a challenge but quite good fun. There wasn’t much time for very much else, but I did manage a couple of local vignettes amid the chaos.

The other interesting outing was a walk at the top of Edinburgh’s iconic Forth Bridge (the rail one). This was run by Network Rail for the benefit of Barnados and gives a view of the area that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s the subject of this month’s panel.

Coming Up

We have a Glen Affric trip at the end of the month. The main event, however, is likely to be non-photographic. It looks like we’ve sold our house and are moving to Northumberland; that’s likely to take a fair chunk of time. More to follow…
